John Carew Swim School

Project Type: Pool Deck

Location: Brisbane. Queensland.

The John Carew Swim School is a family run business with a rich history, that has been coaching generations of children since the early 1960’s. Ignited by his passion for the water and a keen interest in technique and timing, John Carew founded his own swim school to pass on his knowledge. He devoted his entire life to swimming and was recognised for it by the industry through the honour of coaching the Australian Swim Team at the Olympics on three separate occasions. His wife, Barbara and son, David, now carry on his beliefs at the swim school as they continue to inspire young minds for many generations to come.

A significant refurbishment in 2020/2021 included the highly slip resistant Life Floor 2.0 Ripple texture tiles installed onto decks around the pools throughout the centre to improve comfort and safety.

Life Floor in the colour Sunshine was used to clearly indicate approaching stairs and improve accessibility.

Because Life Floor was involved from the commencement of the proposed floor surfacing renovation plans, we were able to suggest some construction applications to ensure the Life Floor finished floor height matched surrounding pool edge tiles height thus providing a nice clean looking finish, and importantly, eliminating a potential trip hazard.

The heavy, hard to clean, temporary rubber mats have now been discarded and the new floor is being kept clean using a battery-operated floor scrubber.

Over my life in the industry, I have watched pool technologies and products progress. It has been significant, but it tended to be focused on sanitation, filtration, energy and temperature technologies. One area that has been lacking in advancements has been pool decking, in particular the safety risks associated with it. Providing a decking that fulfills the important safety requirements of swim schools the following has been difficult to achieve:

- Wet non-slip surface
- Padded surface which reduces injury risks if falls occur
- A robust, easy to clean surface

Life Floor is the only product I have come across that can satisfy all 3 elements, plus it added a colourful aesthetic boost to the pool surrounds.
